R. Otunbaeva begins tour of Southern Kyrgyzstan

Bishkek, presskg.com - Kyrgyzstan’s President Roza Otunbaeva is visiting Batken region today as she begins a tour of the south of the country that will also take her to Osh, RFE-RL reports.

The tour comes amid tensions over the planned deployment of some 50 unarmed police from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) to observe law enforcement procedures in Osh following the deadly clashes.

The OSCE deployment has been agreed to by the Kyrgyz government in Bishkek, but has been opposed by some ethnic Kyrgyz, hundreds of whom earlier this week protested outside the OSCE representative's building in Osh.

The June clashes between ethnic Uzbeks and Kyrgyz in Kyrgyzstan's southern Osh and Jalal-Abad regions, which left more than 300 people dead and displaced another 400,000, came two months after President Kurmanbek Bakiyev was ousted in a bloody revolt.
